Word Power Challenge Job Description:
Objective: To provide the homeschool population the opportunity to compete in Reader’s Digest Word Power Challenge, a multiple choice vocabulary bee for 4th -8th graders.
Tasks to be done:
1. Find a facility and set a date for the event
- Refer to rules, but in past years it has had to take place some time before January.
- Glennwood Community Church has been used in the past. You will need a contact person who attends the church.
- Barberton Grange at 9400 NE 72nd Ave. will donate the facility as part of their community service.
2. Advertise event to the homeschool community
- enlist at least 6 kids per grade level.
- CCCHE meetings and newsletter, Kingsman meetings, ECHO and ExCEL, NOVAH, The Columbian, etc.
- Follow up after event with announcements of winners in newspapers and newsletters.
- Awards, etc.
- Door prizes (optional)
- Educational materials if donated
- One per grade
- Have kids fill out tickets for both these and random seating. Pull out winners name
- Awards
- Participation Awards
- Photocopy certificate high quality paper
- Gift certificates from Burgerville, Roundtable Pizza, Papa Murphy’s, etc.
- Grade Level Winner
- 1 big Thesaurus, Dictionary, SAT study guide, or the like
4. Administer competition
- Basic techniques are in the packet. In the past we have not excused kids after missing two questions, but let them continue to play along.
- Score sheets and other forms are available on the CD in the ExCEL Word Power Packet.
